Mettis Invests in 5 axis machining technology
1st June 2005

We have cemented our move into 5 axis machining technology with the addition of a Matsuura 5 axis machine tool to support the growing demand for our forged- machined product range. Recent new business successes have meant we needed to accelerate our investment plans to support customers in the current aerospace upturn.

The addition of 5 axis machining capability is a natural progression in supporting our business strategy of providing Forged, Machines and Processed solutions for our customers and complements our current 3 and 4 axis capability. We have secured numerous contracts for components in the last 12 months that can be produced on either 3 axis or 5 axis machines. We are now able to select the optimum route for a part rather than fitting to what we have always known. This is better for Mettis and ultimately better for our customers.

Our business development strategy allows us to focus on the needs of specific segments of the aerospace market. This particular investment project was geared towards the machining of prismatic aluminium components for actuation and control applications with a view to consolidating the supply chain.

We plan to unveil our next machining investment project in the not too distant future. The template has now been set whereby the machine selection will be focussed towards a different but nonetheless specific family of parts currently forged by us. As a leading supplier of forged product to some of the biggest names in the aerospace industry we have a number of exciting opportunities in discussion that will allow us to continue providing a dedicated one stop shop to our core customers. With on site processing, testing services, heat treatment and kitting we are well placed to develop tailor made solutions for both existing and prospective customers.”
